Before Christmas the Bahamas Humane Society awarded the first ever “Betty Kenning B-Humane Awards”. This award was created in recognition of the wonderful dedicated service Mrs. Betty Kenning gave to the animals of the Bahamas, and during the years she served selflessly as President of the Bahamas Humane Society Board. The very first award was given to Mrs. Kenning herself, the second award was given to Ms. Maggie Crouch-Thompson and Mr. Julian Jakusz, who call themselves the “Pink Potcake”. The Pink Potcake team is made up these two dedicated animal lovers from England. They have lived in the Bahamas for over 25 years and the Pink Potcake began when many years ago Maggie was driving past the old Montagu Hotel, and there on the wall was a little brown potcake, but to her horror one of its front legs was almost completely severed and hanging on a small thread. With the help of tranquilizers and tasty food she managed to catch the dog and took it to the Bahamas Humane Society where unfortunately it had to be put to sleep, but she never forgot that little brown potcake because it was her very first venture into dog catching. Some weeks later she happened to mention to a friend that if she was to continue being involved with animal work she would need somebody to help her. “I’ll help you”, said her friend. The friend was Julian Jakusz and that was the start of the Pink Potcake animal rescue team, which has been going ever since. Over the years they have become involved in a spay and neuter program and have assisted thousands of pet owners who just do not have the means to pay for veterinary expenses themselves. They are also called upon to catch stray, injured and sick animals, particularly dogs, and have been able to relieve the suffering of many of the pathetic animals we’ve all seen on the streets of Nassau. They both have small vans which they have kitted out, at their own expense, with traps, catch poles, muzzles and a variety of tasty enticing foods and can often be seen buzzing around the back streets of Nassau. Although they have also worked alongside other animal groups including Proud Paws and A.R.K., they say that they could not possibly have achieved as much as they have without the help of the Bahamas Humane Society. In Nassau, the Humane Society is the only animal shelter facility which is open 24 hours, and when, for example, they have picked up an injured animal in the middle of the night, they have had somewhere to take it for treatment and shelter.Kim Aranha, President of the Bahamas Humane Society told the paper that there were quite a few nominations for the “B-Humane” Award and the process to choose the recipient was not taken lightly. “We did a lot of research, and it was decided that Pink Potcake was the most deserving recipient for the award in 2008”. “We are looking forward to giving out the award to other deserving persons in November of this year.” Meanwhile it give us all, at the BHS, great pleasure to see two dedicated animal lovers like Maggie and Julian be publicly recognized for their immensely good and hard work to make a better life for the animals of new providence.” “It is on behalf of those animals that we thank PINK POTCAKE most sincerely”. Press release issued by : Kim Aranha, president of the Bahamas Humane Society.
